GET OUT OF MY HOUSE (a.k.a. summer activities for kids)

8 ways to keep kids entertained this summer

Ahh, the lazy days of summer. The numerous hours of uninterrupted sunlight and togetherness. The months spent searching for some of that elusive Summer Fun while constantly seeking balance between extremes:

  • Forcing kids to drink water so they don't get dehydrated out in the sun, then forcing them to apply sunscreen so they don't get a third degree sunburn out in the water
  • Being treated to choruses of, "I'm bored" when there aren't enough activities planned, then being treated to the complete exhaustion of spending an entire day chasing a toddler around the zoo
  • Annoyance that their little faces are constantly all up in your grill, then sheer terror as their little faces disappear into the crowd at the water park

It's not as easy as I make it look, which is saying a lot because I don't even remotely make it look easy. Here's how I've been balancing the real Summer Fun my kids hoped to have as the final bell rang on the last day of school, with the kind of Summer Fun I enjoy - the kind that requires zero effort on my part.

ways to entertain kids this summer (not really)

Obviously this isn't really a sustainable summer entertainment plan - after all, I can only let the kids have so much "free time" before my homeowner's insurance rep starts to get suspicious. So, I've found several ways to let the kids have a blast while retaining my sanity (and the contents of my wallet) (and without exerting any effort whatsoever). Please check out my REAL 8 Outdoor Activities For Kids on Home Made Simple to keep your kids entertained - and out of your house. Bonus: for the rest of the summer you won't have to pick glitter out of your margarita ice. **Update: Home Made Simple shut its doors, and the 8 activities article is no more. But take heart - you could always have another breath-holding contest!

I hope you enjoyed yourself while you were here - and I hope you come back! Please share inappropriate giggles with me on Pinterest, Twitter, and Facebook, or subscribe via email so you don't miss a thing!
