5 Secrets of an Awesome Dad

5 Secrets of an Awesome Dad

What, exactly, grabs a normal dad by the lapels of his tattered bathrobe, shakes the video game controller out of his hand, and launches him up to the lofty status of Awesome  Dad?

I happen to have an Awesome Dad, in the form of my husband, conveniently located right here in my house, and no, he isn't currently sitting directly to my left, bribing me to say nice things with promises of taking the kids out to pick strawberries tomorrow in the hot sun. Without me.  So with him as my inspiration, after years of observation, completely unbiased by strawberry picking bribes, I feel qualified to give you...

The Five Secrets of an Awesome Dad

Awesome Dad in headgearBe Uncool
If you're lucky, you reach a point when you're so unconcerned with being cool, that your very uncoolness is cool. When dads get to this stage, they're suddenly free to do all sorts of cool uncool stuff, like dance in the aisles of Lowes or wear a headband into a gas station, because amusing the kids becomes more important than impressing the Quik-E-Mart employees. Bonus points: your wife can laugh at you, too.

Know Some Stuff
Step 1: Have some interests.
Step 2: Share them with your kid. Unless your interests are drinking beer and skeet shooting. If that's the case, I'd wait to share your interests until they're old enough to sign a waiver.

Keep Mama Happy
Duh.

Awesome DadJust Go With It
Let's face it, sometimes baffling stuff becomes inexplicably life-alteringly critical to a kid. Maybe you don't want to wear a purple shirt every single day simply because, suddenly, somebody else wants to wear a purple shirt every day and she neeeeeeeds you to match. You better believe an Awesome Dad would wear the stupid purple shirt anyway, though.

Be Full of Surprises
As a bonus, you can join me at P&G Everyday for the final, absolute best secret of an awesome dad - my latest post over there is a teeny bit sentimental, with a very funny twist. Prepare yourself - the secret that Gerry chose to reveal about his parenting success isn't what you'd expect. Or, if you know him very well, maybe it is.

I hope you enjoyed yourself while you were here - and I hope you come back! Please share inappropriate giggles with me on Pinterest, Twitter, and Facebook, or subscribe via email so you don't miss a thing!

I don't want to brag but I totally have that first one about being uncool down. Well... except for the part that you're so good at it that you're actually cool. But like I said, I don't want to brag.

Since I was never cool to begin with, I'm thinking I've already accomplished step 1. As for step 2, I know too many things and my kid will undoubtedly be expected to know more. There probably wouldn't even be a kid if I wasn't doing step 3. Step 4? I'm pretty laid back, so I'm not too concerned with rolling with the punches. I have to work on step 5. I'm not full of surprises. In fact, my tank is approaching fumes.

  6. Small steps, you'll get there. Or else maybe not. But I'm pretty sure that part of being cool is not really being aware of your coolness, so it's possible you'll never know...

  12. I'll ask him - I sure hope so, because all this praise is wearing me out. Plus, he's making me look bad, parent-wise.
